Apple Interview Experience: SWE, L4 and SDET

Apple interview experience: compare an L4 Java backend loop, Ads Delivery SWE questions, and a separate SDET assessment prompt with role notes.

Last updated 2026-10-31.

Apple's teams hire across very different stacks, so a backend Java account should not be treated as a guide to every Apple engineering role. The report below is specifically for an L4 SDE-2 Java backend candidate in Hyderabad. It is valuable for the details it names, and limited for the same reason: it is one person's loop.

Reported role and rounds

The candidate described two rounds. Round one covered Java fundamentals, Spring Boot, and coding. Round two returned to Spring Boot, added multithreading, and included a system design scenario. The complete prompt set is in the Apple L4 SDE-2 interview experience on LeetCode Discuss (2025).

Round 1: Java, Spring, and coding

The source names these Java and Spring questions. Each item links back to the Apple L4 SDE-2 report (2025):

  1. Why is Java platform-independent, and which languages are platform-dependent? (source)
  2. How does ArrayList differ from Map, and how do Map and Set differ? (source)
  3. What is inheritance, and what types of inheritance can be shown with examples? (source)
  4. What is the static keyword, and where have you used it in a project? (source)
  5. Why are Spring beans used, and how does Spring differ from Java? (source)
  6. Why use Spring, and how do common Spring Boot annotations work? (source)

The same round included four coding tasks, all from the same Apple report (2025): Merge Two Sorted Arrays (source), Top K Frequent Elements (source), Longest Common Prefix (source), and finding the maximum number of trains that can stop at a station given arrival time, departure time, and platform number (source). That makes ten listed prompts for this round.

Round 2: multithreading and system design

The second round included questions about where Spring Boot runs and which files manage dependencies (source), followed by a countdown timer task (source). The input could contain only hours, minutes, or seconds; the timer had to display HH:MM:SS and update each second. The system-design prompt asked how to circulate a paid form to billions of users (source). These prompts are from the Apple L4 report (2025).

How to prepare for an Apple L4 Java backend interview

The source points to a backend role where framework knowledge sat beside ordinary algorithm work. Practice explaining why a collection fits a task, write a timer with clear input parsing, and talk through scale assumptions before choosing components. Do not use this report to infer Apple's interview format for hardware, frontend, ML, or another team. For system-design practice, see system design interview questions.

Additional Apple software-engineer report

A separate Apple Ads Delivery SWE account lists these behavioral and project-design questions. They are from a different candidate and should not be merged into the L4 Java backend loop above:

  1. How do you resolve a conflict with a peer? (LeetCode Apple Ads Delivery report)
  2. Tell me about a design you proposed to a lead and how you made the case that it met the use case. (same report)
  3. How do you give feedback to junior team members? (same report)
  4. Which generative-AI tools do you use at work, and how do they improve your efficiency? (same report)
  5. How do you upskill yourself? (same report)
  6. Describe a project where you had to learn an unfamiliar technology. (same report)
  7. How do you respond to many comments on a feature pull request and take the review to closure? (same report)
  8. Describe your project's high-level design, your impact, and what you would change if doing it again. (same report)

Another Apple interview report, whose title does not give a level or team, asked the candidate to merge two employees into one data structure and explain the choice. The candidate described using a HashSet and discussing its internals, equals, hashCode, and a comparator. (LeetCode Apple interview report)

Separate SDET online-assessment prompt

An Apple SDET assessment report uses this wording: “Write a program to ‘factorize’ the extremities of two ASCII strings.” The collected notes do not explain what “factorize the extremities” means, so the unusual wording is preserved rather than interpreted. (LeetCode Apple SDET OA report)

Frequently asked questions

Does this Apple interview reflect every software engineering role?

No. It is one L4 SDE-2 Java backend account from Hyderabad. The questions are useful for that profile, but the source does not establish a process for Apple hardware, frontend, ML, or other teams.
